When the technical side of Fios goes wrong, there are a lot of commonly reported errors that tend to crop up and these can be really frustrating and time-consuming. Let’s take a look at what these errors are and how to resolve them:
1) Not able to connect the Fios router, cable modem or wireless gateway
When Fios routers, cable modem,s or the Fios wireless gateways are not able to connect, it’s time to enter the device’s IP address into a browser on a computer that is already connected to your router.
Once you have done this, click the option on the left side of the screen that says ‘My Account and then ‘Wireless Network‘. You should see an area where you can select a new Fios wireless gateway.
Now that you have done this, go ahead and reboot everything by unplugging them for 10 seconds, waiting a minute or so, before plugging it back in again.
2) Fios service not working on the wireless gateway
When your wireless gateway is detected but you are still experiencing issues with your Fios service, try to go into the menu of the wireless gateway and disable the wireless radio.
Once this has been done, wait a minute or so before re-enabling it. If you are still having problems after doing this, try to change the settings on your modem or router by putting them into Bridge Mode.
After putting these devices into bridge mode, you should then keep the IP address on your computer the same, but change the subnet to something different. Once you have done this, reboot all devices and wait for them to connect before trying to access the internet again.
3) Fios service not working due to corrupt information in the cloud
If you are experiencing problems with your wireless gateway or if it’s showing that it cannot connect to the Fios router, a good option is to update the information in your cloud account. ISP providers across the country set up subscriber accounts where each holder can manage their packages.
To do this, put in a new Cable Modem and wait around 10 minutes before trying to access the internet again. If you are still having issues after doing this, you can call Verizon to have them reset your cloud account.
4) Fios internet not working due to faulty cables
If you are having problems with the wireless connection, the first thing to do is check that all of your cables are firmly in place and that they are properly plugged into the devices. If it seems like this isn’t the issue, turn off everything, wait 10 minutes, before turning the modem back on.
Once you have done this, unhook your router for another 30 seconds before connecting it again and then reboot the wireless gateway to see if that has fixed things. If not then turn off everything once more to see if there are any other errors being reported.
5) Problems with Fios service due to bad settings
Fios settings can affect the way you connect to your cloud services. If you are experiencing DNS problems, your first option should be to change the DNS settings on your wireless gateway.
To do this, go into the menu of your router, click ‘Network Address Server Settings’ and then change the primary and secondary DNS. Once this has been done, wait around 10 minutes before trying again. If you are still experiencing issues, then disconnect everything and wait for 10 minutes before trying again.
6) Fios wifi not working
There are instances when your Fios wifi will not work on your phone, Fios won’t work on TV, or your Fios is not working soon after a power outage. The first thing you should do is to power off your modem for 30 seconds before turning it back on.
Turning off your modem allows for it to refresh its cache and use a new dynamic IP address where necessary.
If this doesn’t fix the problem, try to reset your router by unplugging both ends of the power cable and plugging them back in after 10 seconds.
If these steps still do not make Fios work, it might be time to reboot your computer, router, modem and wireless gateway to see if this has made any difference.
7) Fios wireless network not working with certain devices
If you are using a different device on the Fios wireless network and it is causing problems for you, there are still some things you can try before calling up Verizon Verizon. Iphones not working on Fios wireless has been a widely reported issue.
There are some workarounds that can be applied though, like changing the DNS settings on your wireless gateway or trying to reset the Gateway by unplugging the power cable for 30 seconds.
You can also try switching to wireless N mode instead of Wireless G. If none of these steps have worked and you are unsure what router model you are using, give Verizon a call to get them to check it for you.
8) Fios wireless working but very slow
If the Fios wireless is working fine but you are experiencing a big drop in speed when compared to your wired connection, this might be due to a weak wireless signal. To fix this, try moving your modem or wireless gateway to a different location.
If this doesn’t work, try changing the channel that your router is using on your wireless network. If you are still experiencing problems with Fios not working on your TV then it might be due to the television set you are using. Try setting it to ‘air mode’ and see if that helps.
9) Fios internet not working on multiple devices or wifi keeps dropping out
If you are running into problems with your Fios wireless gateway, it can be due to one of two things – either you need to change the frequency band that your router is using or you might need to change the channel that it’s broadcasting on.
To do this, go into the wireless settings of your router and look for a ‘frequency band’ option. Once you have changed it from auto to either 2.4GHz or 5GHz, reset your router and then test both bands out to see which one works best for you.
If changing channels on your Fios wireless network does not help, try changing the name (SSID) and password of your network – this forces the router to make a new DHCP request which sometimes fixes connectivity problems.
10) Fios router won’t connect to the modem
If you are having trouble connecting up your Fios wireless gateway to your modem, there are some simple steps that can be taken to resolve this.
First of all, try resetting your FiOS gateway by inserting a pin into the red zone resetting pinhole at the back of the gateway. Once you have done this, plug the wireless gateway back in after 10 seconds.
If none of these steps have worked, then check if other devices are connecting to the internet properly – if not, then it might be time to call up Verizon to fix this for you.
11) Fios Internet not working but TV is.
If your Fios wireless internet is not working while TV is working properly there is something wrong with your wireless gateway or modem.
How To Refresh Gateway Dynamic IP Address
Here’s how to refresh the gateway dynamic ip address with most Verizon FiOS routers.
1) First you need to sign into your router. I have a page – How To Login To Your Router With Default Password, ESSID & IP Address with most popular routers covered. Once you are signed into your router you need to find out if it uses the 192.168.1.1, 10.0.0.138 or 192.168 *(x).*
2) Once logged into your router look for a WAN (internet/modem) section and then click on “NAT” (Network Address Translation). Scroll down to the bottom of the NAT page.
3) In this section you should see a line that says “Default Gateway” with 192.168.*(x).* listed under it. You need to click on this link and change it to: http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com and then press the “Enter” key on your keyboard.
4) If done properly, you should get a pop-up login screen for your router asking you to enter the default username & password. It’s either admin/password or just password depending on which router you have.5) You are now logged into the control panel of your FiOS Wi-Fi router.
The very first thing you must do is go to the DHCP section and uncheck the “Use Router As DNS” option. This will allow your ISP’s servers to push down new DNS info onto your FiOS box so it can resolve addresses like Netflix.com instead of having to rely on your router’s DNS setting which may not be accurate.
6) After you’ve changed this setting, click on the “Network” tab at the top of the page and then click on the sub-tab for “WAN”. Under this section, you will want to change your “Connection Type” option from PPPoE to DHCP/Static IP so that the box will request a new IP address from the FiOS service.
7) Now that you have the connection type changed, it’s time to add in your Public Static IP address that was given to you by Verizon. This is found under “My Services” on the main menu of your Verizon account page.
They give out 2 addresses – one for modem and one for the router. Most people use the one for the modem which is typically 192.168.1.1 .
8) After you’ve added in your Verizon IP address (or dynamic DNS if you chose to set that up instead), make sure your Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are set to: 255.255…., 0, 0 respectively.
9) Save these changes and reboot your router. Once it comes back up, try to connect to the internet to make sure all of these settings worked! If you’re still having problems after trying this, then leave a comment below because I’ll be happy to help troubleshoot from there.
10) Video Tutorial
Here’s a video tutorial that walks you through changing your Verizon FiOS router into DHCP/Static IP address mode.
To fix this problem you need to refresh the dynamic IP address of your modem.
If the status lights on the front of your Fios wireless gateway are not illuminated, then you need to unplug both ends of the power cable and plug it back in again after 10 seconds.
12) Issues with Fios wireless network card drivers
Fios is a pretty good internet service for most people but issues do arise from time to time.
One of the more serious problems that has been reported is that when you try to install new Fios wireless drivers, they are incompatible with Windows 10. This means that if your ISP supports Fios wireless then Microsoft will have blocked it by refusing to release an updated driver for the card.
If this occurs, then you can use a workaround that involves using a third-party wireless utility to change the network card driver. Follow these steps:
1) Go into Device Manager and find your Fios wireless network card. Right-click it and choose “Update Driver Software” from the list of options.
2) Choose “Browse my computer for driver software” from the popup menu that appears.
3) When prompted with a list of possible drivers, choose “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.
4) Scroll down to the bottom and select “Network Adapters”, then click next. You should now see a long list of network adapters appear. If you have any USB wireless adapters installed, they will appear here. You can ignore these because you won’t be able to use them to get online.
5) Scroll through the list of manufacturers until you find “Microsoft”. Select “Microsoft” followed by “Mice and other pointing devices (and choose Microsoft as a manufacturer). Then scroll down to the bottom again and select “Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter.” If this option isn’t available, then your network card is not compatible with Windows 10.
6) Click next and the driver updating process will begin. Make sure you have a working internet connection before attempting to install drivers for Fios wireless network cards
If resetting the router back to its original settings or unplugging the power cable of both devices for 30 seconds, then plug them back in and wait until they connect back up automatically does not work, seek professional tech help. Overall resetting or switching down the wireless frequency gateway resolves these errors.
